Loch Lomond Highland Games 2009

Saturday 18th July 2009

Location:  Moss o’ Balloch Park, Balloch, West Dunbartonshire

This year the Loch Lomond Highland Games are returning to their original venue in Moss o’ Balloch Park, in the heart of the village of Balloch.

The Loch Lomond Highland Games were started in July 1967 by a group of local businessmen who were keen to promote the area and restore its popularity with local people and tourists alike.  In those days the challenge was to raise £500 to run the event in the hope that sufficient people would turn up in sufficient numbers to warrant making the Games an annual event.

Nowadays, with approximately 10,000 to 15,000 visitors to the Games each year, they appear to have achieved that aim and are now numbered amongst the top three Highland Games events in the country.

The Games are a traditional Highland Games and hosts a number of events that are loved by both participants and visitors including:

  • The official SGA Heavyweight World Championship (Ball, Hammer and Caber Weights)
  • The Scottish 80 Metres Running Championship
  • The Scottish Backhold/Cumberland Style Wrestling British Championship
  • Highland Dancing
  • Solo Piping
  • Cycling
  • Tug o’ War
  • Pipe Band events at local and national level
