JPEGMAFIA is a new York rapper famed for his cutting lyricism. He is coming to Glasgow’s Barrowland for one night only on 30th March 2022.

JPEGMAFIA is Barrington DeVaughn Hendricks. Born to parents of Jamaican heritage and raised in Brooklyn. His family uprooted him as a teenager to move to Alabama in the Deep South. Here he experienced a lot of racial tension. A few years later he went to Louisiana and joined the US Air Force.

After a tour in Iraq and stints in Germany and Japan, where he started creating music under the name Devon Hendryx, he returned to the US and settled in Baltimore because of its burgeoning underground arts scene. It was there that he began writing and producing tracks as JPEGMAFIA.

In 2015, after the death of Freddie Gray and inspired by the protests happening in the city, he recorded the mixtape Darkskin Manson. JPEGMAFIA’s debut album Black Ben Carson followed in 2016, along with a collaborative EP with fellow rapper Freaky called The 2nd Amendment .

JPEGMAFIA moved to Los Angeles in 2018, where he released his sophomore album Veteran. Its title alludes to his military background and the fact that he’d been making music for a while.

Immediately afterward, he started writing a slew of songs – which ultimately totalled 93 – as possibilities for its follow-up. An avant-garde mix of experimental punk rap, All My Heroes Are Cornballs arrived in late 2019 with guest appearances from Helena DelandBuzzy Lee, Vegyn and more.

In early 2021, JPEGMAFIA came out with EP2! and he was also featured on the track chain on / hold me by BROCKHAMPTON. JPEGMAFIA released the song TRUST! in August plus announced a series of UK tour dates for March 2022.
