The Glasgow Christmas Lights Switch On event in George Square is always one of the year’s most popular events. This year (2013) there was over 125,000 applications for tickets and with just 11,500 available that leaves a lot of people disappointed.
George Square is not the only place where the lights will be turned on this Christmas! We have gathered together a list of alternative Christmas lights switch on events that are either happening in Glasgow or near Glasgow. If we have missed any let us know in the comments below.
Saturday 16th November 2013, 12pm to 6pm
Paisley Christmas Lights Switch On 2013
Two headline acts will be performing in Paisley, UK hip-hop star, Tinchy Stryder and Dundee rockers, The View, along with support acts boyband Mr. Meanor, Alexa and the Clyde 1 Roadshow DJs. There will also be the traditional reindeer parade, which this year will be led by Santa Claus himself …. more info

Renfrew Christmas Lights Switch On 2013
There will be children’s entertainment throughout the day from noon, with stilt walkers, face painters, circus performers and a puppet show. Santa himself will be on hand to dish out presents to local youngsters in his grotto, while there will also be fun fair rides next to the High Street … more info
Hamilton Christmas Lights Switch On 2013 & Rutherglen Christmas Lights Switch On 2013
South Lanarkshire council run both these events, with the switch on happening at 4.30pm in Rutherglen and 6.00pm in Hamilton, there will also be entertainment throughout the day … more info

Edinburgh’s Christmas Light Night
Well not that near Glasgow, but it is less than hours train ride away. Sir Chris Hoy will be joined on stage by local children from the charity Cash for Kids who Light Night is proud to support. The event culminates with the switch on of the lights, a sing-a-long, and finally a spectacular firework display … more info
