Super-Featherweight Championship: Ricky Burns v Joseph Laryea

Scotland’s newest boxing star Ricky Burns makes the defence of his WBO World Super-Featherweight title in Braehead Arena on Saturday 12th March.

Burns, from Coatbridge, won the title in September when he wrestled the belt from ferocious Puerto Rican Roman Martinez in one of the most thrilling battles ever seen in Scotland during which Burns was floored early, but  back to beat Martinez on points.

This win entered Burns into an elite group, as he is now one of just nine other Scots to have won a world boxing championship in history.  With that win, he has begun his journey in the footsteps of greats like Benny Lynch, Jim Watt, Ken Buchanan and Scott Harrison.

For the first defence of his title, Burns took on a formidable challenge in Norwegian based Colombian Andreas Evensen on a show title Monarch of the Glen.  The fight, at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow, resulted in another unanimous points win for Burns with the Scotsman also scoring a knockdown in the first round.

Next he will face Ghanaian Joseph Laryea in March a Braehead Arena.  And the 27-year-old will need to be sharp against the big-hitting Laryea, who can boast 14 wins from his 18 professional fights.

Ranked 11th by the WBO, Laryea earned 11 of those victories by stoppage.
