On Sunday the 2nd of October 2016, thousands of runners will take to the streets of Glasgow for Scotland’s largest mass participation sporting event: the annual 10k and half-marathon road races.

Last year saw almost 30,000 runners take to the streets of Glasgow for the 10k and half-marathon races, passing some of Glasgow’s most iconic landmarks including the Clyde Arc and Finnieston Crane.

In an event that drew competitors from as far afield as Ethiopia, Kenya, Brazil and Austria, the half marathon was won by South African Moses Kipsiro who finished in just 62 minutes and 18 seconds. The women’s half marathon was won by Kenya’s Edna Kiplagat with a time of 68 minutes and 21 seconds, retaining her Great Scottish Run title from 2014.

The 10k winner was Ben Stevenson of Falkirk Victoria Harriers, who recorded a time of 31 minutes and 6 seconds. The women’s title was clinched by Jenny Bannerman of Inverness Harriers in a fantastic 35 minutes and 41 seconds.

Race route

Maps for this years races are available on the Great Scottish Run website. The races start at George Square and head up St Vincent St, turning down past the Hydro and the SECC and over the Kingston Bridge. After the Kingston Bridge, the courses separate, and the half marathon heads over to Pollok Country Park, through Bellahouston Park and then back towards Glasgow Green via Pacific Quay and along the Clyde, where both runs end.

How to enter

If you would like to take part, visit the Great Scottish Run website where you can download the entry form.

Entry fees include all race administration costs, souvenir race t-shirt, finishers medal, personalised race certificate, ChampionChip timing unit, race number and finishers goody bag!

Running for a charity?

If you would like to run for charity and don’t already have a charity in mind, there are more than 50 charities listed on the Great Scottish Run website for you to choose from.

Junior run

The junior run will take place the day before the Great Scottish Run.  There are 2 events for juniors: either a 1.5k or 3k run through Glasgow Green.  The junior events are for children aged between 9-17 years.  For more information including training advice, visit the Junior Great Scottish Run website.

Road closures

Because of the run, there will definitely be quite a few road closures and diversions on race day.  For full information about these, visit the Great Scottish Run website where all road closures etc. will be listed nearer the time.

  1. what a shambles Glasgow city council made of this with the road closures, Got to Ibrox on my scooter at 12. only to find road closed I tryed gooing through Brand street only to find the same. No diverted traffic signs anyware with cars all trying diffrent roads to get through but to no avail. I then tryed the squinty bridge only to find this closed.Next I went around the back of Bellahouston park and once again this was closed. I had spent i hour driving around Glasgow looking for a way through.Eventually made my way up past Silverburn and then through to Pollokshaws then through to the gorbal and into Brigton and finaly arriving at Dennistoun at 1.15 . a tottal shambles when asking stewarts how to get into the town not one could tell me.

  2. Thanks for all your comments, and well done to everyone who took part in the 2009 race.

We have passed any suggestions etc. from above onto the Great Scottish Run team, as we at Our Glasgow have nothing to do with the organisation of the event – we just tell people that it’s happening!

    Thanks again,
    The Our Glasgow admin team.

    1. I am running with my own SuperDad, Dougie and Sister, Lindsay again this year for my daughter Lily and to raise awareness for all single fathers that care and want be part of their child’s life!

The support and atmosphere has been amazing, long may it continue.

Please donate a penny if you can – THANK YOU 🙂

  3. the run was amazing was very well organised and a great turn out 🙂 personal i struggled running it but found i got great support from the guides round about 😀 thanks to everyone who ran and helped me

  4. Enjoyed a fine comeback via the 10K after a numder of years absence. Great to see so many younger people taking up the sport…stars of the future. Only gripe was that parts of course were too tight i.e Kingston Bridge which hampered run times. Its freedom of the city for only a few hours so as wide as possible next year. Overall great day outeven with that weather !!!

  5. i had a brilliant time participating in the race my only small gripe would be the lack of distance markers, i only saw a 2k, 5k and 7k marker where i wished there had been a 9k marker so i could sprint in the final km, it was not untill i came round the last corner that i realised the race was nearly over! but over all what a brilliant day and will be signing up again for next year!!

  6. It was a great day! One suggestion would be to try and get the trains to put on normal services as opposed to sunday services on the day. Would save people having to drive.

  7. An absolute giggle, response from spectators was what got me through it, especially the girl handing out jaffa cakes(cheers)
    See you all next year

  8. Great Day and good atmosphere.

Only complaint some more room on bothwell street and the bridge is needed hard to pick up pace in such a tight space, but will be back next year.

  9. Simply Fantastic half marathon! expertly organised,i have done 5 now and this was my 1st time in the Great Scottish Run and i will be back next year…travelled up from Liverpool and well worth the effort! As for the time…its very obvious that they cant have personal stopwatches on display and that is why we have chips!
I did my personal best despite it being soooooo busy with runners and a big well done to all who organised and helped on the day etc.The bag-pipe players throughout the run was a nice touch, even for an englishman! Well Done Glasgow!

  10. Please, please can the organisers do what some of the other large runs do and completely ban the wearing of i-pods and headphones. Racing wheelchairs are simply impossible to stop or even to slow down on downhill sections (especially in the wet). Runners need to be able to hear us shouting so that they know we are coming past them. Collisions are dangerous and can result in people being badly hurt. Nobody wants that to happen.

  11. Great event, just as last year

    Here two suggestions for improvement:
Some race stewarts seemed uncertain which way to guide runners. As a consequence I heard one guy crashing into a barrier behind me.

How about a free ticket for public transport as part of your race pack?

  12. Well may i just say it was a brilliant day for the great scottish 10k run as a runner myself it was brilliant ( weather poorly) the scence the other runners the crowds and of course the clyde 1 team made it all the better i certanily cant wait till the next great scottish run and hopefully ill gear myself up for the half marathon

  13. Well organised as always – however STILL confusion re actual finish times with the SLOW group (have drawn your attention to this before). When slow group got underwat START clock registering 16 minutes plus (for first 2 groups). At end many runners – particulary first-timers – thought their time was that showing on FINISH clock, not realising they should be DEDUCTING what was on START clock when they crossed THAT line. This is a weakness that should have been addressed ages ago! All very well saying anklets record TRUE time. You should make that CRYSTAL CLEAR when sending out packs.
