Hogmanayday!

Hogmanayday!

George Square at the Bells

When: 31st December 2014
Location: George Square

Free

Glasgow’s traditional Hogmanay party in George Square is no longer. Instead, we have fantastic family-friendly events throughout the day on hogmanay.

The new years eve event in 2014 bringing in 2015 will finish at 10pm and feature music and free fun for all the family with kids’ activities including themed crafts and storytelling, highland dancing, ceilidh bands, and traditional Scottish food, drink and entertainment. The aim is to create a family day in George Square rather than a one-off party.

If you are looking for an outside street party to bring in the new year, there is one happening in Ashton lane. Might be more of what you are looking for.

2015 promises to be a great year for Glasgow, so bring it in in style with at George Square with a traditional family celebration with the best in Scottish music, food and drink.

Full details of the George Square Hogmanay party will be released in the coming weeks, sign up to our newsletter to stay up to date with the latest news on what’s happening in Glasgow.

Hotels near George Square

If you aren’t from Glasgow and you are planning on being around for the celebrations at George Square this new years eve or as we say in Glasgow Hogmanay. Then you’ll probably need a hotel, a smart idea would be to book a hotel in the city centre, or even better, a hotel on George Square.

  1. What has happened to Glasgow the new year party in George Square was embarrassing
Invited friends from London to bring in the new year I wish we had gone to Edinburgh
The music was not that good the coffee machine was broken the cost of the ride’s for kids £2 & £2.50p (they know how to celebrate abroad better than we do)
Bring back a committee that know what the Glaswegians .

    1. In no way do I wish to belittle the plight of anyone involved in the tragic accident on 22nd December where innocent people lost their lives; however, we booked to spend NYE in Glasgow, believing Glaswegians would party at least as well as those celebrating in Edinburgh; how wrong were we to believe that. We travelled from Warwickshire, for NOTHING. It appears Glasgow has cancelled NYE 2014!

We decided between London, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow only to find Glasgow wasn’t even in the reckoning!? So, our choice is to now travel to Stirling Castle or Edinburgh.

It appears Glasgow is closed until at least the 3rd January.

Last time we’ll venture ANYWHERE near Glasgow – What a waste of time, effort and money – I agree with Many Smith – a year later!

      1. Glasgow hasn’t had a large-scale NYE event in the city for a number of years now. The council decided not to fund it. When we did have one it was ticketed, and tickets sold out in advance. The George Square event now is a small family event during the day (and I use the word ‘event’ loosely). However there are a massive number of events in pubs, clubs and other venues all around Glasgow. We still know how to party; we’re just not allowed to do it in an open air celebration!

  2. I really think you should all stop moaning and think about the past – in years gone by you would bounce from one house to the other and enjoy a drink and party with friends and family. I’m 43 – done the street party bit, and yes, it was good, but I had more fun bouncing round streets and meeting people I knew. There are loads of clubs and plenty of parties that ‘young’ people or ‘childless’ people can go to in Glasgow – Ashton Lane, Merchant City plus the different parties in different pubs – if a night out is what you want. But what about when you have children, and you want to do something special with them – where do you go? When you have children you either stay in or visit friends, so I think Glasgow has a great balance, and a family orientated George Square is a wonderful idea!! Plus it’s free 🙂 – you have the rest of the city to amuse yourselves with. So get out there, party and use your imagination!

    1. This will now be the third year that George Square Hogmanay celebrations have ended at 10pm. I’m not sure where you got your information that this would not be happening this year.

There is other street parties and events going on in Glasgow on Hogamany Just follow this link and you will find lots to choose from.

        1. No tickets needed. There is a temporary bar in George Square, as well as numerous bars on and around George Square. Please remember this event finishes at 10PM.

    2. Here here well said, used to go every year and now its a complete shambles. Wat the hell has happened to it, we Scots love a good party, come on get the party back where folk want to go to and see the bells in.

    3. looks like u have to hit a pub or club if u have no children with you , its really a shambles if you ask me not like it used to be used to be the thing to hit glasgow and have an good street party to at least 1am them days are long gone x
      hope u get sorted

      1. It is a shame that George Square Hogmanay for the bells no longer happens. It was decided by GCC that it was not cost effective for them to run. IF you are looking for an outside street party type things. There is one happening in Ashton lane. Might be what you are looking for.

  3. Why on earth can’t they have both? If they ticketed people to get in at a reasonable price they would make the money they needed to have both the family events during the day as well as cater to the crowds who want to see te bells! That is the whole point of New Year!!! Absolutely ridiculous! If famlies want to leave at ten then they can wether the events carry on or not!! Cutting out a major section of Glasgows population by doing this!

Really makes very little sense at all!

  4. Well Glasgow city council was thinking of coming to George Square this year. Usually Christmas for the kids and familys Hogmanay for the adults. It seems that now you only care about familys. There is no point in going as there will be no bells it’s a pointless celebration like having Christmas on 25th of January. Bring it back next year or else I hope it fails!

  5. looks like a change of plans was planning a trip home with wife and friends for homanay but a 10pm finish no late music and with Edinburgh hotels wanting a four night min stay why bother.

  6. Thats not fair at all. No festival. Whats the council in Glasgow saying? New years not worthy of cellebrating? Its an ideal way for us Councillors to save money cause we are going to be in our houses for the bells as we have been for as long as we can remember cause we are boring. We dont care what anone else wants we decide what happens in our city, Seems like perhaps all of the above.

  7. was planning to come to Glasgow for Hogmanay, but
not so sure now! Ceilidh dancing and Ice Skating were on our
list of things to do. the Ceilidh finishes at Ten in George square
and the ice rink is going to be covered in curling stones!!
    I need a new plan??!!

  8. You can still get tickets for the Merchant Square Party. Because the Council has pulled the plug on George Square, the Merchant Sqare Party will be the biggest and best yet! And it’s INDOORS! You can get tickets from any of the Bars inside Merchant Square.!!

  9. this is typical of the council for years the event was free then it went up to £5 the £10 then need i say more year after year the bands got worse while Edinburgh shines if Edinburgh can wast millions on a tram surly we poor folks in Glasgow should at lease have out one night out per year, get some of our council tax back ,and let people bring drink, that was the biggest ripp of ever last yer aye come spend £15 and be forced to buy our drink at £3 a bottle get a grip council spend the money this just show up Glasgow as the poor city that cant even afford a new year bash

    1. Hello,

I m French and planning to come and spend New Year’s Eve in Glasgow. So i get it right, there is gonna be no special event in Glasgow this year ? Is it still worth coming for Hogmanay according to you ?

      Thank you,

      Fabien

    2. Hey David i hear ya glasgow city council has totally went down hill theres so much shit they spend there money on…… What did we have last year can’t remember it was that crap to right Edinburgh always have it better Hey we might not have a castle but we are bigger get it sorted Glasgow!!!

    3. Please can you tell me when the tickets for George Square are going on sale and where we can get them. Also is there going to be anything on after 10pm in the Square?

    1. Hello folks! We are coming to Hogmanay in Glasgow all the way from Machu Pichu, Peru, South America, please someone gives me the heads up, shall we come or shall we go to Edinburgh instead.

      1. I would go to Edinburgh instead, I live near Glasgow and been looking into whats happening but not much! Ceildhi and ice skating till 10 before whole point which is the bells in Scotland. Edinburgh will have fireworks, good bands, DJs and electric atmosphere but also thousands of people, so get tickets now if you want to go. Dependant on weather, the one year I orginised a big get together wi friends in Edinburgh it was cancelled due to high winds but we still managed to party!!! Appreciate your effort to come all the way from South America so have fun and enjoy whatever happens!

  10. i went as a family night out and was on benefits and paid the £15.00 but yes year the tickets have went up i have a disability and do go out all year long except for this event. I’m going with 3 other people but there not willing to pay the£20.00 which is very unfair on my behave as i looked forward to be going this year.

I’m so disappointed that i cant go but because of the rise in prices i won’t be going but would love to as i was looking forward to be going this year.

    1. Hey Went Last Year Was Amazing bought the tickets for this
year 4 Tickets for this year and cant go so if anyone interested in
      buying leave a reply cheers

  11. Went last year and the tickets were only £15, think this year is a rip off, especially since you have to pay £3 for a small bottle of beer, and the queues are terrible at the beer stands. Toilets were in a terrible mess, they need to do something about them this year. Does anyone know who is headlining this year?

  12. went past 3years was great but last year was crap for alot of people thinking they could bring there on drink but to be told no i was a bit better prepaired smuggled it in also last years event was not as busy as past 2 years events

    would i recomend NO !

reason rip off now 19 pound per ticket and £3 pound per drink no thanks better going to pub or club nice and warm and prices about same

come on glasgow council get a grip £19per ticket mabe charge that but give some drink vouchers with this

  13. Was there last year and teh year b4 top nite but freezing its a lot more controlled if u dont take ur own alcohol cause i seen a fight between a father and son 2008 and didnt c a single altercation 2009 because the sale of alcohol was controlled also it is cheaper than most clubs in the city centre only £3 a drink.

  14. Does anyone know when this years tickets are going to be going on sale? and if u r going to b allowed to take ur own alcohol?
