If you aren’t from Glasgow and you are planning on being at the Hogmanay celebrations at George Square, then you’ll probably need a hotel. - Carlton George Hotel – 4 Star – Hogmanay £180.00 (25m from George Square)

- The Merchant Lodge – 3 Star Hogmanay – £55.00 – (200m from George Square)

Dom, my last mention on number 44, I wasn’t getting at you with regards to you disliking Deacon Blue, I totally agree that they should just let people know and then they have the choice if they want to go or not, rather than booking your ticket incase they get sold out only to find that you dont like the group.
Yeah, Ive been told that they allow plastic bottle with your own booze, I think its a great idea.
Well Guys, my first year deciding to freeze to death in the square, been in scotland for over 28 years mind and know how to freeze my behind off lol. What a bunch of moaning minnies lol, A scottish Band, some good join in music and a lot of people will sing along, hey you pays your money you take your chance, N Joy I will be.
Well I have been going to George Sq since this all began..My son goes and My Wife go too..over the last few years we have had great acts like the View, Snow Patrol, Yes u know what im going to say..Deacon Blue are past it, the only gd thing is the atmosphere, as usual will be brill..why pick a band that are only gd for support and put them on a top billing…COP OUT, and ive now been told this year there is no tribute acts..the last 2 years acts were brill with suspiciously Elvis ( brill ) Bootleg Beatles ( Brill )..Even these 2 are better than the has beens Deacon Blue..Well we will be there but I think GCC will be getting a few complaints……….
Absolutely shocking that we are not allowed to bring our own alcohol this year! Completely ruined it for me, and every single person in my family is now not going. Ruined the night for us and will have to look for alternative night out now! How can you possibly expect so many people jammed into george square to go back and forward to your extremely expensive bar for drinks? and then push through again! shocking, and extremely let down.
fargin ice holes on hogmany site (winterfest) now saying Ticket holders will not be permitted to bring alcohol in to the venue and there will be no decanting at entrances to the venue.
also 3 bars will open charging £3 per drink alcohol and £1.50 a soft drink they can go fxxk them selfs ! you will spend half the night trying to get served just think of the amount of people trying to get served 10,000 or so
complaint will be on way to the feckers i have been last 4 years no problems with people drinking and enjoying a cheap night feckers just making more money off all us
ohh well just have to smuggle in
wont be back next year they can ram it right up there jam role
not as if they are stoping people getting drunk as the bams still selling it just making the dosh from us people that want to enjoy scottish culture get swallyed up and enjoy ourselfs
whats wrong with that scottish have done this for many many years
responible drinking laws lol a fecking joke !
i hope the board that made this rule mind when they visit family over festive period dont take there own drink as that would not be responible drinking or would it !
I think its shocking that you cant bring your own booze into hogmany venue, ive already phoned them and yes they did confirm this, i have also asked for a refund and they said the would get back to me on this.
hi liz
i have also asked for refund i emailed them (6 tkts) if i wanted to pay £3 per drink i would have went to a night club where it would be nice and warm
Glasgow Hogmanay revellers are sure to have a bad taste in their mouth – not to mention a large hole in their pocket – this year after Scrooge bosses ruled that they will have to stump up at least £3 for a drink in a plastic glass. For the first time revellers wishing to bring in the New Year in Glasgow’s George Square will not be allowed to take along their own tipple to see in the bells.
In previous years partygoers were allowed to bring their own drink to the December 31st party, sometimes requiring to decant it into plastic containers if the drink was in a glass bottle. In practise though, previously many revellers simply transferred their drink to a plastic container before going to the event, to ensure that they would be able to celebrate with minimum fuss and maximum enjoyment.
This year all ticket-holders attending the event in George Square will be searched by police or security staff before entry, and any drink (hard or soft) – even that in plastic containers – will be confiscated. The shock move comes despite authorities having consistently praised New Year crowds for their outstandingly good behaviour.
Management of the company which currently oversees the New Year event, Culture and Sport Glasgow, insist that the move, while likely to be unpopular, will enhance safety.
Revellers will see the chance of a cheap drink evaporate at a time when they are forced to pay large surcharges in transportation costs to get to-and-from the event (plus the £15 for the ticket)
A spokesman for Culture and Sport Glasgow commented:
QUOTE
“Revellers will be able to buy drinks to toast 2010 from bars in and around George Square, which brings us into line with other festivities in the city.”
fargin ice holes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! coned again
Can anyone tell me if the bars will be open on New Year’s Day in Glasgow? We are staying for 2 nights and it may prove impossible now to get a drink on NYE if you have to Q at one of only 3 bars?
Thanks
Nicky
hi nicky counting house will be open new years day on george sqaure all wetherspoons were open last year
new years day is not busy glasgow like gost town but nice to have a few drinks in weatherspoons
iam on same boat staying 2 days at premire inn george sqaure will just get tanked up before event starts then smuggle the beavy in
It’s not so much the fact that they’re taking away our alcohol, its the fact the ba*star*s hid it from us! Didnt even state on the website that we couldnt take our own alcohol! Completely defeats the purpose of getting a good drink and bringing in the bells! Dont particularly fancy trapsing half a mile to the bar at 5 to 12, and the bells coming in whilst i barge through back to my place with a half empty watered down jack and coke!! ragin!!
hi admin
could you please pass these comments to glasgow council and ask them if people can get refunds do to changes that were not make public till after ticket sales

They have just completely ruined the full thing for everyone, they get enough money off everyone, and its not as if there is ever any trouble at the square with people bringing there own alcohol, I want a refund for 4 tickets!!!!
Where did all this come from – people are just want to enjoy themselves and have a great time and now they are stating this at last minute, after everyone has bought there tickets!!!

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH just found out tonight we are not permitted to take our own booze…SHOCKING!!! I have been going for 4 years now but this year if that rule stays I shall be demanding a refund of my ticket. How can 3 or 4 bars cater for so many? I don’t want to spend my night in queues, rather spend it at my local.I wasn’t over excited at the line up,but I had already got my ticket and was still planning a great night with friends.
Everyone should demand a refund!!!
i have asked for refund emailed no reply !! so angry the feckers blanking us mabe it will call them to reinstate the drinking ban if not not iam sure a demonstation could be sorted at the feckers offices or some nice banners made up
Im going to George’s Sq Can you take drink with u??

ITS an absoulte discarce no drink aloud it a joke & who want to go if u cant take yer own drink wits the point standing froozen with no drink wen u could be in the house or else were havin a great time !!! and be 15 pound up .. they are gn loose a lot of ppl there was 5 of us going but al be maken sure i get a refund !! for sure
Regarding my earlier comments, there are plenty of bands that would’ve been relevant to have on and fit the criteria. Travis, Franz etc as already mentioned. The fact they’ve got the price at £15 and now banned you’s from bringing your own alcohol in with you is Dick Turpin-esc only he wore a mask.
I wish I’d have gone to Edinburgh now, Glasgow city council certainly know how to alienate people. Im gonna try and enjoy it all, its my girlfriends first visit to Scotland and all. Doubt she’ll be that impressed with the price for no doubt watered down Carling or some other crap booze.
Arghh!
Oh and if you want to get a response then I have the details of an events officer.

I’ve already emailed my disappointment.
silly, silly organisation. Are they totally daft?! The license for george square license for alcohol is ridiculously easy to obtain. This is a fully fledged scam for more money from us. And how silly of them. Are they so naiive to think that people are just as stupid enough to pay 15 quid to stand in the pissing rain listening to a band i wouldnt pay 15p to see nowadays SOBER? because lets face it, money the issue or no issue, who came up with the idea to share 3 bars with 10000 people!?!
absolute retards.
i have been onthe fne to them NO REFUNDS will be givin a was very anoyed and said listen it hard enought to use the toilet in the place let alone get served at a bar with 10,000 ppl jesus are you mad he said no refund at all RAGIN !!!!
You CAN get a refund after all, i complained via email and told them how angry and disappointed I was. Took them a few days to reply and they didn’t really offer any adequate response directly to the cmplaints but did say I could get a refund. Here’s part of the email so they cant give to one and not to everyone…
Get your money back people, stand up to them!
i am gtn a refund
there was 5 0f us gn to

Glasgow’s Hogmanay bash was an absolute joke!
Better than Edinburgh they say…….well that wouldnae be hard.
What the hell was the line up all about. Deacon Blue were omly decent act on the rest were mince,,, theres loads of great scottish acts..wit about The Fratelli’s,Paolo Nutini,The View,Simple Minds,Travis,Franz Ferdinand….but who did they get some crap called The Black Hand Gang and Bahookie….Joke!!
Get a grip Glasgow if that’s the best ye can do then don’t bother cause us Glaswegians can have a better time wi a carry out and a stereo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what a joke!!!!!!outside bars ran out of red ,rose and white wine,by eleven o clock
Would just like to say, even although the booze ban put a damper on things (which ended up with me taking the car, as I know they wouldn’t have any booze that I liked, I dont like beer or wine!) the night was indeed fantastic, we had a brilliant time. We, however, spent a whooping £70 on drinks. I bought the tickets with the fact that we could take our own drink, so wont be going next year!!!!
I was looking forward to seeing Deacon Blue and didnt hold out much hope for the other acts, but to my amazement, the Black Hand Gang and Bahookie where amazing, especially Bahookie, I was really impressed!!!! And then less than impressed with Deacon Blue!!!!
I think Glasgow need to get their finger out and start preparing 2010-2011 hogmanay and get us a half decent act, especially if we are to pay £10 a ticket then buy silly wee poxy plastic bottles of beer!!!!!!
I would like to hear ‘Skerryvore’ play at Hogmanay 2010 -2011. They’re said to be the ‘Runrig of the 21st century’ and are all very attractive young boys who can play really well. They have had a lot of positive media coverage this year not only from the newspapers but also ‘The Hour Show’ in which they performed on in Febuary. And it wouldn’t be their first performance in George Square as they played at winterfest 2009.
A brilliant Scottish band. I am a huge fan and to hear them in George Square would really be a brilliant start to 2011. SKERRYVORE!
