New Order

5th May 2012

Location:  O2 Academy

Tickets:  £38.50

Tickets for New Order’s April UK tour go on sale today (Feb 3rd) at 9am.

The current lineup – which doesn’t include founding member Peter Hook - will play four shows across the UK.  These begin with a hometown gig at Manchester’s O2 Apollo on April 26 and end in Glasgow at the O2 Academy on May 5.

The news came after New Order played two charity gigs and a one-off show in London last year.  The band announced in late 2011 that they’d reformed, but that founding member and bass player Peter Hook would not be part of their line-up.  Instead, keyboard player Gillian Gilbert, who hadn’t performed with the band for over 10 years, rejoined and bass duties were taken up by Tom Chapman, who was part of frontman Bernard Sumner’s recent project Bad Lieutenant.

Although the band have made it clear that they have every intention of continuing to perform under the name New Order, Peter Hook revealed to NME last week that he has instigated legal proceedings against his former bandmates to stop them doing so.

New Order were formed in 1980 by frontman Bernard Sumner.  By combining New Wave and electronic music, New Order became one of the most critically acclaimed and highly influential bands of the 1980s.  Their 1983 hit “Blue Monday” was the best-selling 12-inch single of all time.

Happy Mondays

4th May 2012

Location:  O2 Academy

Tickets: £40

The original lineup of Manchester band Happy Mondays to hit the road for first time since 1992.

Despite previous reunions, this will be the first time the original lineup of the band have played together since 1992.

Founded in 1980, the group, featuring Shaun Ryder, his brother Paul, Mark Day, Paul Davis and Gary Whelan, along with Rowetta and Bez, were at the forefront of the late-80s Madchester scene.  They were fundamental in blurring boundaries between indie rock and acid house with songs such as Step On and Kinky Afro.  They were one of the key bands on Factory Records, inspiring the title of the film 24 Hour Party People.

Their first album, Squirrel and G-Man Twenty Four Hour Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile (White Out), debuted in 1987, followed by two classic albums; Bummed in 1988, then Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches in 1990 which went platinum in the UK selling more than 350,000 copies.  This put the band firmly on the music map as one of the most influential bands to come out of the UK in the early 1990′s.  Singles “Step On” and “Kinky Afro” from this album both reached number 5 in the UK singles chart.

By the late 1980′s, the Happy Mondays were an important part of the Manchester music scene and personified rave culture.  Numerous world tours meant the band had international success as well as massive success in the UK.  The line up of the band during this first and most important ten year phase never changed, and the six original members Shaun Ryder, Paul Ryder, Gary Whelan, Paul Davis, Mark Day and Mark “Bez” Berry remained a tight unit until Shaun and Bez re-formed the Happy Mondays with Wags and Kermit in 1994.

The Happy Mondays’ tour begins in Newcastle on 3rd May.  Tickets go on sale on 3rd February 2012.
