Two Fat Ladies seafood restaurant in Glasgow City Centre was opened in 2004 as the sister restaurant to the steadfast favourite of the same name in Glasgow’s West End.
The menu in Two Fat Ladies is primarily seafood based, but there are always alternatives for those who think they don’t like seafood. An average 2 course meal costs what a main meal might cost in some of Glasgow’s other top restaurants (particularly the seafood restaurants). And yet the food is by no means of a lesser standard. Everything is cooked to absolute perfection and the dishes are simple, yet elegant. Even those determined to loathe seafood forever and ever would most likely be converted by the food in Two Fat Ladies.
During my most recent visit, myself and my partner decided to order from the pre-theatre menu. The reason for this was purely because the dishes on it during this particular visit sounded delightful. The very reasonable price of the pre-theatre menu was just the icing on the cake! I had a warm wild mushroom salad followed by salmon in a tomato based sauce that cannot be described as anything but absolutely delicious. All of the main courses are served with vegetables and potatoes, which were roasted to perfection. My partner commented that the carrots accompanying our main meals were “the nicest carrots ever” (a little offensive considering I’m the one who cooks in our house, but perhaps I shouldn’t compare my home cooking to that in Two Fat Ladies!). The fish was wonderfully prepared; just cooked, but beautifully crispy on either side. Brilliant fish.
In fact, brilliant food! Both myself and my partner had the sticky toffee pudding which was served with a butterscotch sauce. I would return to Two Fat Ladies for this dessert alone. Need I say anymore?
Although the Two Fat Ladies website advertises the restaurant as being of an informal atmosphere, I didn’t feel that this was the case. But as long as you don’t arrive in your jogging trousers or paint overalls you’ll be fine. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and very knowledgeable with regards to the dishes on the menu’s and the wine list.
One thing I want to mention though is the paintings on the walls. They were beautiful, but the characters in the paintings were rather ghoulish, and they really felt a little morbid for my taste. But each to their own…
