One of my friends is constantly singing the praises of Stravaigin, so in looking for a place to have a nice anniversary dinner, I decided to book a table.
Stravaigin is situated on Gibson St, close to Glasgow University and the West End. It is split into 2 levels; upstairs is the bar (which also serves pretty decent food) and downstairs is the restaurant proper. The restaurant is very cosy; the wooden beams in the ceiling and the simple decor give a feeling of beign right at home. They do squeeze loads of folk in though. Even though I was almost at the same table as the people sitting next to me it still felt like a private and cosy dinner with my partner.
Everything in Stravaigin is cooked from scratch, and the time it takes to get your meal mirrors this (it took almost an hour between the starter and main course). However it is worth waiting for. The menu does change quite a lot, so you probably won’t get exactly the same dishes on it more than once.
The word Stravaigin comes from the gaelic for ‘wandering about’, and the restaurant aims to mirror this; Stravaigin produces innovative dishes using the best Scottish produce together with interesting ingredients from across the globe. It seems that the chef is quite the perfectionist and apparently travels a lot in order to update his menu and to learn different cuisines.
During the meal, I had aubergine and ricotta canneloni with garlic polenta, followed by parma wrapped rabbit loin with salsify puree and shallots in the most delicious gravy I have ever tasted. To be perfectly honest, I actually didn’t know what salsify was until I tasted it (and then Googled it later), but it was delicious. My partner munched his way through a starter of ham hough and goats cheese with quails egg and beetroot, followed by lamb chops which were “very tasty”. Normally you just get a grunt out of him, so that means that his meal was extremely nice.
The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the only real complaint I have is that the restaurant was really warm. Don’t put on too many layers if you’re going for a meal in Stravaigin!
As a price guideline, a 2 course meal for 2 plus wine and drinks came to £60. Not too bad when you consider the quality of the food. They also have a pre-theatre menu which is very good value.
I would recommend booking in advance for a table as I tried to book two days in advance and couldn’t get a table until 9pm.
Only been once for a friends brithday. But it was delicous. Bit more expensive than some Glasgow restaurants, but both the food and the service were excellent!
