Khublai Khan Mongolian restaurant is situated right in the heart of Glasgows Merchant City; Candleriggs.
As their website says, eating at Khublai Khan is an “experience”, which is reflected in the décor. The walls are fully decked out with Mongolian artefacts and fabrics. They have also created a mini Great Wall of China and a mural of Mogul warriors which takes up an entire wall.
Khublai Khan, *Average price based on a 2 course meal from the a la carte menu for 2 people
The starters and desserts are part of the set menu. For starters you can get dishes such as crocodile bites, thai chicken wings or cumin flavoured wild boar. There aren’t many desserts to choose from but the mars bar cheesecake is delicious.
For your main meal, you get a trip to the Mongolian barbeque where you create your own dish. First you choose your rice or noodles and then it’s onto the vegetable table; they do have a good selection of veg to choose from. Then you need to decide which meat you’re going to have; meats such as ostrich, boar, crocodile, shark and various African antelope are available along with the more normal chicken and beef. Then you pick the ingredients that make up your sauce. There is a big board on the wall which tells you exactly how much of everything you need to put in to make a specific sauce, so I would recommend you have a look at this first; just chucking a few spices into a bowl rarely works well. You then hand your bowl over to the chefs who barbeque your food for you on their giant hot plate.
It is a really fun way to eat and if you go for the full feast you can go up to the barbeque as many times as you like. This restaurant is particularly good for special occasions as there is lots of time for socialising. The house wine is rubbish though.
Fab, took my mum and dad for their 40th wedding anniversary, they absolutly loved the diversity of flavours, kangaroo haggis was brill.
Even my 4 year old son was able to get involved he loved the fish cake starter and was really excited about going and preparing his own meal he tried zebra and white fish. Fab night highly recommended.
In my opinion Khublai Khan’s is one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to in Glasgow. There is a wide variety of meats ranging from game meat to zebra and ostrich. The idea that you make you own meal, choose your own meat, veg and make your own sauce and have it cooked for you is brilliant.
The staff are very helpful, especially explaining how everything works for first timers. I would highly recommend this restaurant in Merchant City to anyone!
