Average price*: £20 – £40
Opened in 1982, the Ashoka is the only Indian restaurant in Scotland to use the method of oven baked cooking, without the use of oil.
Now famous as a curry-karaoke venue, the Ashoka is centrally located in Glasgow, situated just a few minutes from the Kings Theatre, and from Sauchiehall St, one of Glasgow’s busiest pub/club areas.
Ashoka, *Average price based on a 2 course meal from the a la carte menu for 2 people
Depending on what night you go along, the Ashoka can be as cosy and romantic, or as loud and brash as you like.
The a la Carte menu is very enticing, and the food was ok; definitely not the best curry I’ve ever had. In fact, in Glasgow there are at least several far better Indian restaurants. The atmosphere is warm, relaxed and welcoming, until the karaoke-ers enter. I’m not a fan of karaoke at the best of times, but the noise is just horrendous and kills the comfy atmosphere in one fell swoop.
I would definitely never recommend getting a takeaway from this restaurant. They managed to forget my popadoms and get the order wrong. In addition the food was bland and dry; all in all, less than adequate.
If you like karaoke head along to this joint, but if you like food I’d steer well clear.
(I must say that this is NOT a review of the harlequin group Ashoka, but the Ashoka on the corner of Elderslie St and Berkeley St).
delicious fresh food and served by polite friendly staff had a lovely meal with my family and was very happy with the service.
A poor excuse for Indian food – there are better restaurants for Indian food in the city.
Had bought a KGB deal for £19 for 4 people (worth apparently £79) – included was 5 course meal and karaoke. The food was nice when we eventually got it. They were only interested in us buying the very overpriced drink (no draft beer). It cost us £13.25 for 2 bottles of beer, a bottle of Magners and a diet coke! We were in and hour before we got our poppodums; I complained because we were still waiting on our pakora – however when we did get it it was fresh and delicious; there was 2 chicken chats but the deal was for 4 so my husband asked how we were expected to share them, haha. They brought us more! Mains were nice but not much rice. Dessert was also included but we left as they were getting served and we gave them to the girls sitting at the next table. Will I go back – a BIG FAT NO – well disappointed at the length of time it took for the meal to come AND it said on the deal it was a buffet and it wasn’t. A well mis-sold deal
