  1. Yeah – because that’s what teachers are there for – to be PR machines and event guides for the city council. Never mind maths and english… Christmas lights are way more important…

  2. AS A MOANER!!!!!GEORGE SQ is a public street…all should be entitled to visit or see the lights beings switched on. was never a ticketed event years ago, there was never a problem with overcrowding.busy bustle of like minded people enjoying the event from whatever angle they got(instead of the show off idiots who knows someone who knows someone who can get them)..have missed out on tickets again this year…due to lack of advertisment..why dont the councils tell the schools when tickets are available?parents would find out fast enough then.
maybe if the council werent trying to line the coffers with the money being made more would be happy..and b4 some smart ass says the tickets are free..all the side shows, coffees, sweets, skating costs us all a mint…are all the pitches hired out? who gets the money from that…..
same as the glasgow green carnival..are we supposed to enjoy that?
#not a patch on what it was years ago!
as for waiting for an hour and half to see santa at the sq..not this year no way…to have 3 children taking in one sitting with 1 picture and pay 3 tickets is a rip off
glasgow lost its christmas spirit years ago

  3. hahaha, i live in ayrshire, bought my tickets off ebay for a small sum!!!! hahaha GUTTED!!!!
Cant wait though, will be a good night!

  4. Ok.

First: Do all the moaners on here think that George Square is made of elastic? How could the 620,000 or so people who live in Glasgow possibly fit in to the Square all at the same time? Are you insane? Stop being such idiots!

Second: It was advertised on the radio, in newspapers and on many websites. How else should the council have advertised it? Did you want them to advertise it on the 6 o’clock news, or in skywriting over the city? Don’t be such crybabies! Everyone knows that it happens around this time in November EVERY YEAR, so if you do really want tickets you can easily find out when they are on sale. It is ticketed. It has to be. GET OVER IT! It isn’t surprising, terrible, disgusting, unfair or a disgrace. It may be unfair that you didn’t manage to get tickets, but that isn’t the councils fault.

Third: You can still go and see the lights when they have been turned on. There are tons of events on in the Square for the next 2 months, any of which you can take your kids along to enjoy.

Fourth: I think you might find that most of the people who did managed to get up for 9am on a Saturday morning to get tickets also pay their council tax.

Finally: The simple fact that this event, along with all the others for the next few months are happening shows that Glasgow has most definitely retained it’s Christmas spirit. Don’t lose yours just because you missed out on the switch on of the lights – your kids will still enjoy going to see the lights if you don’t ruin it for them by moaning.

  5. i think it is terrible that u nd tickets to go n c the swith on of the lights i remember when i was young it was always a family thing to go and watch the lights being switched on and it always brought the excitment of christmas to u. my daughter was quite upset when we tried to explain to her that we couldnt go. what has happened to the magic of christmas when u have to phone for hours for tickets and still not get any

  6. hello i am 12yrs old my gran paiys her council tax and george sq belongs to the people it should not be a ticket event! it is totally unfair… u can still control the crowd without making it a ticket matter.
I wanted to go and see the Christmas Lights I am annoyed with the people who made this arrangement and my gran is too!

  7. I was lucky enough to get six tickets for my family to attend the event for the 1st year ever. There was plenty advertisement on real radio on the lead up to the tickets being released at 9am. I do feel, the fact that even small babies require tickets is a bit much, although it is for our own safety after all!

  8. I think its a discrase that you need to have tickets for this, yes they might have advertised it in the evenning times but not everyone buys this it should have been advertised better and gave people a chance to get tickets!!!! alot of disapointed people!! was taking my son and nieces to this they are very upset that they wont get to see this.

  9. As a glasgow council tax payer (who pays the full whack and doesnt get it free on benefits) I find it very annoying the way glasgow council has handled the tickets for this event. This year despite reading many newspapers I did not see any mention of how to get tickets at all. Handing them all over to a commercial ticket sales company who charge for booking fees and postage really stinks! You have to wonder if the councillors had to phone the telephone line to get their tickets. We went for many years when it was open to all, there was never any problems at all with overcrowding and the atmosphere was great. Glasgow council needs to sort this out before the same fiasco occurs next year.

  10. once again as a council tax payer and a council worker i couldn’t get my hands on any tickets for my wee girl who is very disappointed. When I was a child all people in glasgow were welcome to the square were there was a great party atmosphere.

  11. People should stop there greetin. It waz advertized in the evening times n other newspapers. People were probly too lazy tae get oot there beds that mornin tae go n get them. Am happy coz ma whole family got tickets n we are all really xcited. Cannae wait – george square here we come xx

  12. i think eveyone complaining about no tickets being left is shocking, if your not fast your last. as for the clearly spoilt children being so upset they are unable to speak, im sure they will get over it..its not the only festive event on in glasgow. try taking them to midnight service in church on christmas eve, then they may appreciate the real meaning/value of christmas.

  13. I got tickets for this and my 3yr old daughter can hardly contain her excitement, right enough, Im just as excited too. I found out by reading the newspapers. The Evening Times had an article about it with details, about a week before the tickets went on sale. It was in a few other main newspapers too, so don’t know how people can complain about it being badly advertised. I don’t agree with tickets being sold on Ebay, thats so unfair, but unfortunately that happens with tickets for everything now.

  14. I hope these people complaining live in Glasgow. I do not think it is fair if people living outside Glasgow are getting to see this event before the actual residents of Glasgow who actually pay through their Council Tax for services like these.

  15. I would like to know where and when the tickets for the switch on were advertised because I have been listening to the radio and buying the newspapers in the hope that I would obtain a telephone number or contact details to get some but to no avail I’m afraid. This is an absolute disgrace because my son is really upset that he wont be able to see the Christmas light being switched on. I have been telling him about this event for weeks now and he was really excited about it but unfortunately I will now need to explain that we cant go and he is going to be very upset!!!!!!!

  16. The tickets were free! The only reason the event is ticketed is to ensure that there is no over crowding that might cause some serious accidents.

  17. i too are disgusted that the christmas lights tickets are sold out. my wee grandson is really upset, when my kids were small you didnt need tickets for this you just turned up, there were no accidents then just families enjoying thierselves.now you have people trying to make money selling them, get your finger out glasgow and fix this so real families who are genuine can have a chance.

  18. What do you people expect? George Square is a confined space and the number of people who want to go is higher than the number of people George Square can accomodate.

So tickets are the only option.

    1. i think the fact that the council employees swindle them all is what upsets the public they then have the audacity to expect us to support them during strikes no chance

  19. Glasgow has lost the spirit of Christmas with the only way to get tickets for the christmas switch on event is via a commercial telephone line for a administration and postage fee charge. Completely disgusted in this. Presumably the council officials wont have to telephone this line continually to find it engaged and then to get through and find that all the tickets are sold. My children are extremely disappointed to miss out on this. I remember when you simply turned up and got to see it all for free and without restrictions.

  20. I am so disgusted to see that all the tickets are sold out ,there was no advertisement of when the tickets were going to be available and i fell that it is done in secret. I now have grandchildren who are very disappointed and i myself am very angree with the council.
I am very disgusted to see the advetisment for tickets on sale available on ebay at a cost of £17 per ticket which is absolutely outrageous as these tickets are given free and fell there should be restrictions on who should be given these tickets. Something needs to be done.

  21. Gates open at 4.30pm and the festivities are on from 5.30 – 7pm.

No admission is permitted after 6.15pm, so we assume that the lights must go on just after this time…

  22. I have only ever been 1 time to the lights and loved it. I would have loved to see it 1 more time before it is too late. the evening was great the peple everything
